Frequently Asked Questions

Coravin Capsules

What are Coravin Pure™ capsules?

Coravin Pure capsules power all Coravin Wine by-the-glass systems by pressurizing unopened bottles of wine with argon gas so that a sip, glass, or more can be poured.

Why does Coravin use argon gas in its capsules?

Coravin is a pioneering wine-by-the-glass system that allows wine lovers to extend their wine experience without compromise. Instead of pulling the cork, the Coravin needle allows users to access the wine inside the bottle while preventing oxygen from entering the bottle.

Our pour-by-the-glass systems use Pure™ Argon Capsules—argon gas, which is already used in winemaking—to replace the wine poured from the bottle. This food-safe, inert gas is the cornerstone of our gas-based wine preservation technology. It creates a protective barrier, prevents oxidation, and allows the wine to continue aging naturally, just as the winemaker intended.

How long does a capsule last?

Each Coravin argon capsule allows you to pour up to 15 glasses of wine (150 ml) with Timeless systems or 20 glasses (150 ml) with Pivot systems. To ensure you get the most out of each pour, follow the tips below for Timeless systems:

  • Check that the needle is securely attached.
  • Quickly press and release the trigger 3-5 times to start the wine flow.
  • If the flow of wine slows down, quickly press and release the trigger again.
  • Reminder: It takes 25-30 seconds to pour a 5 oz glass using the Timeless system.
  • When there is only 1 glass left in the bottle, pull out the stopper to save gas.
  • Trade secret: If you are pouring multiple glasses, press and hold the trigger halfway, the wine and argon will stop, move to the next glass, and release the trigger to continue pouring.

What capsules does Coravin Sparkling use?

Coravin Sparkling, a product designed to preserve the effervescence and freshness of sparkling wines after opening the bottle, uses Coravin Pure™ Sparkling CO2 capsules. These capsules are specially developed for use with the Coravin Sparkling system.

Each Coravin Pure™ Sparkling CO2 capsule has the capacity to preserve up to 7 standard 750ml bottles of sparkling wine. However, the actual number of bottles that can be preserved with one capsule may vary depending on the amount of wine poured each time.

The wine preservation process works by replacing the volume of wine poured from the bottle with an equivalent amount of CO2 from the capsule. This means that the more wine you pour from the bottle in a single serving, the more CO2 from the capsule will be used to replace it.

Can I use capsules other than Coravin with Coravin devices?

No, you should never use capsules other than Coravin with Coravin wine pouring devices. It is essential to use only Coravin Pure™ capsules, which are specially designed to work seamlessly with Coravin Timeless, Pivot+, and Coravin Sparkling® systems.

Here are a few reasons why it's important to use only Coravin Pure™ capsules:

  • Safety: Coravin Pure™ capsules are precision-engineered and rigorously tested to meet strict safety standards, ensuring reliable performance with Coravin wine-by-the-glass systems. Other brands of capsules may not be compatible and could pose a serious safety risk.
  • Performance: Our Pure™ capsules provide the precise pressure and flow rate needed for optimal performance and ensure the protection of your wine. Capsules from brands other than Coravin may result in reduced performance or even damage to your system.
  • Warranty Protection: Using capsules other than Coravin Pure™ will void your warranty, as it is considered misuse. Only Coravin Pure™ capsules guarantee the full warranty on your device.
  • Wine Quality: Every Coravin system is designed to preserve the taste, aroma, and character of your wine. Capsules from brands other than Coravin may not maintain the protective environment your wine needs, which can affect your wine experience.

For the best, safest, and most flavorful experience, always trust Coravin Pure™ capsules, which are filled with argon, a gas already used in winemaking.

Coravin Timeless

Using the Coravin Timeless system to pour wine by the glass is simple: insert, tilt, and pour.

  • Place the system on top of the bottle and press down to insert the medical-grade needle into the cork.
  • Tilt the bottle as you would when pouring from an open bottle.
  • Quickly press and release the trigger to pressurize the bottle with Pure™ argon.
  • The wine will start to flow as soon as you release the trigger – pour the desired amount.
  • Tilt the bottle upright to stop pouring.
  • Remove the system with a smooth upward motion.
  • The natural cork will reseal itself, leaving the remaining wine intact – it will always taste like it was freshly opened, even after more than 20 years.

And for the Coravin Timeless Eleven model

Here are detailed instructions for using the Coravin Timeless Eleven:

Preparation:

  • Fully charge the Coravin Timeless Eleven by connecting the supplied USB cable to a standard adapter and plugging it into a power outlet. The battery icon will flash during charging and remain lit when fully charged.
  • Disconnect the USB cable before use.
  • Connect the Coravin Timeless Eleven to the Coravin Moments app to track system statistics and access additional controls.
  • If the red light ring is lit, it means that the Coravin capsule is empty and needs to be replaced.
  • Using the Coravin Timeless Eleven:
  • Insertion: Place the clip on the neck of the bottle and press down with your hand.
  • Tip: Hold the spout over the glass and tilt the bottom of the bottle upward.
  • Pouring: The wine pours automatically. To stop the flow of wine, tilt the bottle upright at any time.
When you are finished, grasp the handle and hold the bottle, then pull the handle firmly upward until the system disconnects from the bottle.
  • By following these instructions, you can use Coravin Timeless Eleven to preserve and enjoy your wine for weeks, months, or even years.

How does Coravin Timeless+ differ from other wine preservation systems?

Unlike other systems that require removing the cork, exposing the wine to oxygen and starting the oxidation process, Coravin Timeless systems pour wine by the glass without removing the cork. Oxygen never enters the bottle, so your wine remains protected and always tastes like it was just opened, even after more than 20 years.

How long does wine last when opened with the Coravin system?

With Coravin Timeless systems for serving wine by the glass, wine always tastes like it was just opened, even after several years. This is not just a promise, but a proven fact.

We conducted blind tests on bottles opened with the Coravin system more than 20 years ago. The result? No signs of oxidation. The wine remained as lively and expressive as the day it was first poured, demonstrating the integrity of both the winemaker's craft and Coravin's pioneering technology.

Because the cork is never removed, oxygen never enters the bottle, so your wine continues to age naturally, just as the winemaker intended.

What if my bottle is sealed with a screw cap instead of a cork?

No problem. The Coravin Timeless Screw Cap allows wine lovers to pour their favorite screw cap wines and then store the bottles for up to three months. Each screw cap is made of specially designed self-sealing silicone and can be used for up to 50 pours with the Coravin Timeless device.

Can I clean the Timeless device?

Yes – regular cleaning helps ensure that the Coravin Timeless system continues to function flawlessly.

Here are instructions on how to clean it properly:

Rinse the nozzle under warm, clean water for at least 5 seconds.
Important: Never press the trigger while rinsing. Doing so could damage the system.
After rinsing, quickly press and release the trigger to remove any remaining water.

Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth before storing.

A clean system, perfect pours – every time.

Coravin Pivot+

How does the Pivot system differ from the Coravin Timeless+ system?

With the Pivot system, you open the bottle and replace the original closure with a specially designed Pivot stopper. The Pivot device is then inserted into the stopper, and you can pour. The Pivot system works with any bottle of still wine, regardless of the type of closure.

Because the bottle is open, the wine will stay fresh for up to four weeks. For most everyday wines, this is enough time to finish the bottle while ensuring that the last glass tastes as fresh as the first.

Do I need to remove the cork when using the Pivot system?

Yes, remove the cork with a corkscrew and immediately replace it with the Pivot stopper.

Does the Pivot system require a Coravin needle?

No, it does not. The Pivot system is equipped with a wine tube that allows easy access to the wine through the cork.

Does the Pivot system use the same Coravin Pure™ capsules?

Yes, the Pivot system uses the same proven Coravin Pure™ capsules as the original Coravin systems.

Coravin Sparkling

Can Coravin be used for champagne?

One of the main challenges facing the sparkling wine industry is the fragility of the wine. Within hours of opening a bottle of sparkling wine, the bubbles break down, causing the once-sparkling drink to lose its effervescence.

The Coravin Sparkling Wine by-the-glass System solves this problem with a portable, easy-to-use system that combines a secure, universal stopper with a hand-held charging unit to maintain the wine's carbonation level between pours—whether it's a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks.

What is the Coravin Sparkling™ Wine by-the-Glass System?

The Coravin Sparkling™ Wine by-the-Glass System allows you to preserve sparkling wines, Prosecco, Cava, vintage and non-vintage champagnes for up to four weeks, so you can enjoy them at your own pace, confident that every glass will taste as good as the first.

Can the Coravin Sparkling™ Wine By-the-Glass System be used for still wines?

No. This is an important safety note. The Coravin Sparkling System is designed ONLY for sparkling wines. Do not use the Sparkling System for still wines. Still wines have a different bottle design and composition than bottles used for sparkling wines. Using the Coravin Sparkling system on bottles of still wine may cause the bottle to break and result in serious injury.

How does the Coravin Sparkling™ system maintain effervescence and bubbles?

The Coravin Sparkling™ system uses CO2, the same gas that creates bubbles in wine, to fill the space in the bottle and prevent the bubbles in sparkling wine from dissipating.

This preserves the original effervescence for up to four weeks, so the last glass will taste as good as the first.

How should I store an open bottle in the refrigerator?

For best results, store an opened bottle of sparkling wine in a cool refrigerator. Whether you store it upright or horizontally is a matter of personal preference. The storage position does not affect performance. Please note that we recommend keeping an opened bottle in its safety packaging during storage.
